Actually it’s both. Well, technically it is the focused work that matters, but it doesn’t mean the rest is to be discarded. It’s not “as productive” in terms of useful stuff completed per unit of time. You do need to do both whether the not so focused work is a form of warm-up or simply toying around, personal R&D etc.
